Dewsbury Rangers U16 Girls 1(Webber) Cloughthorpe Tigers 8

Rangers came up against the league leaders who have a 100% league record Rangers had only 9 players and gave a good account of themselves despite the score line.

The visitors had the wind at their backs in the first half and Rangers spent most of the first quarter of the game in their own half. Determined defending by Brodie Burton, Danni Dawson, Alex Sykes and Jade Thomas along with excellent goal-keeping from Kirstyn Thomas kept the Tigers at bay until a great shot opened the scoring. Grace Wilkinson and Jenny Webber in attack were always a threat to the opposition. The experience of Cloughthorpe told as they scored 3 goals to give a 0-4 half time lead.

The second half saw Rangers take the game to the visitors with several chances going the home side’s way. Carly Ward and Bethany Thomasson worked hard in midfield; Burton went in goal for the second half and was called upon to bring off several fine saves as Kirstyn Thomas moved to the centre of defence to good effect. Two defected goals and two well worked efforts added to the Tiger’s tally. The away keeper did well to deny Wilkinson but Rangers ended the scoring as Burton’s excellent clearance was headed on by Wilkinson into the path of Webber who finished well to give Rangers a goal their efforts deserved.

Dewsbury Rangers u16s Girls 4 (Webber 2, Senior, Wilkinson) Tingley U16 Girls 10

Despite the scoreline Rangers u16 girls put in a performance that showed improvement in all areas from the defeat by the same team the previous week. Rangers took an early lead as Grace Wilkinson robbed the ball off a defender in the area to set up Jenny Webber on her debut to open the scoring. Strong defending from Brodie Burton, Hannah Kitchingman, Jade Thomas and Alex Sykes – the latter having her best game in her short career – kept the opposition out. Kirstyn Thomas, sharing goal-keeping duties with Burton, was in fine form throughout. Tingley have many strong, powerful players and took control in the latter stages of the first half with four goals in ten minutes, but Rangers kept in the game with the goal of the match as Jade Thomas fed Fran Senior whose ball to Wilkinson was headed into the path of Webber who burst clear to crash home for a 2 – 4 half time score.

The opposition scored two early goals as the second half commenced. Carly Ward and Beth Thomasson – on her welcome return to the team after several months – had to work hard in mid-field. Senior strode away to score and give Rangers hope, but Tingley restored the 4 goal advantage. Wilkinson out-paced the opposition to reduce the deficit, but the home team tired in the final 10 minutes to concede three late goals.

The effort that the girls put in – many with little experience at this level- was great to see, as was the positive manner in which they played the game.

Tingley Under 16 Girls 11 Dewsbury Rangers U 16 Girls 1 (Ward)

At the beginning of the week Rangers had only 4 players. It is a credit to the club and the girls that in a short space of time, enough players were put onto the field for this fixture to take place. The 9 who played with great spirit can hold their heads high. The home side is strong and broke quickly as 5 goals were racked up in the first 15 minutes. For the next 25 minutes the depleted visitors held their own with the goal of the season being scored by Carly Ward, taking the ball deep in her own half to beat virtually all the opposition. Ward along with hard working Jade Thomas were playing their first game for 3 years, newcomer Hannah Kitchingman making her full debut for which she will have gained great experience. Regulars Kirstyn Thomas, Fran Senior, Danni Dawson and Brodie Burton added experience to the team as Grace Wilkinson returned to lead the attack after a short break. Alex Sykes put in a good defensive effort on her return after a 4 month break.

Rangers tired towards the end as the home side found the inevitable gaps with their numerical advantage. The whole team were given the player of the match.

Oulton Owls U16 Girls 3 Dewsbury Rangers U16 Girls 5 (Senior 2, Wilkinson 2, Holderness)

After a 6 week enforced break, Rangers U16 girls could have been forgiven for not getting into their stride from the off. It was the opposite effect as the visitors raced into a 2-0 lead. Lauren Price and Emma Tootill combined to set up Grace Wilkinson who caused a defensive mix up that allowed Alex Holderness, following up superbly, to hit home the opener.
Shortly after Brodie Burton set Fran Senior free to put in Wilkinson who found space in the box and coolly lobbed the keeper. The defence coped well with the Oulton attacks and first half keeper Jordana Redfearn was ever alert to block a couple of chances. The Owls were back in the game when a harshly awarded penalty for hand ball was crashed home. Rangers responded in the right manner as Price and Burton set Senior free to hit home an unstoppable cross shot. The home side were determined in mid-field and took two chances well late in the half for a 3 – 3 half time scoreline.

Playing up the hill against a strong wind Rangers put on a superb display of defensive football with Danni Pinder and Kirstyn Thomas outstanding in central defence. Full backs Danni Dawson and Sonia Dharni were more than a match for their opponents. Price took the goalie gloves for the second half and made some good saves on the few times she was called upon. Redfearn was a revelation in mid-field and was on hand to aid her defence and set up attacks, ably supported by Holderness who was playing a full game in midfield for the first time for years.
Tootill
set up Wilkinson who beat her defender and put over a cross for left footed Senior to hit home a brilliant right footed volley – this capped a superb all round display from the striker. The final goal saw Senior return the complement to set Wilkinson free to outpace the defence to slot the ball wide of the keeper. Burton and Dharni had to leave the field due to injury near the end of the game as Rangers played with 10 men on both occasions. Both players returned to the field despite their injuries to show commitment to the team that was given the player of the match, as all 11 were outstanding on the day.

Dewsbury Rangers U16 Girls 5 (Wilkinson 2, Price, Redfearn, o.g.) Battyeford U16 Girls 0

Rangers dominated the game in terms of possession and territory, but a spirited opposition managed to keep the home team out for long periods. Rangers put some fine passing moves together with Brodie Burton, Lauren Price and joint player of the match, Jordana Redfearn dominating midfield. A fine long ball found the run of Price who opened the scoring with a deft finish. The defensive efforts of Alex Holderness Danni Dawson and joint player of the match Kirstyn Thomas were too good for the few times the opposition ventured into Rangers’ half. The home pressure soon told with Redfearn breaking clear to crash home the second for a 2 – 0 half time lead.

The second half saw good contributions by Emma Tootill using the space on the right flank well, with Fran Senior and Grace Wilkinson linking mid-field to attack. The latter’s in swinging corner deflected into goal off a Battyeford back. The goalkeeping duties were shared by Danni Pinder and Sonia Dharni who handled well anything that came their way, and both also excelled as they rotated their position in defence. A lovely turn put Wilkinson in the clear to crack home the fourth, and the same player latched onto a through ball to hit the ball onto the post and then react quickest to slot home the rebound for a 5-0 final score.

Dewsbury Rangers u16 Girls 3 (Senior 2,Wilkinson) Hebden Bridge Saints u16 Girls 8

Rangers came up against the form team in the division and, whilst the scoreline didn’t do justice to the effort Rangers put in, the result reflected the superb finishing from the visitors.

As in the previous game Rangers went ahead early on after weathering some pressure from the Saints. Fran Senior broke clear to send a cross-shot into the top corner. Despite the lead Rangers spent most of the early part of the game defending resolutely, with Danni Dawson, Alex Holderness, Sonia Dharni and Kirstyn Thomas holding out well – the latter being the pick of the bunch as she continues to improve.

The pressure soon told as the visitors equalised directly from a corner and soon took the lead with a deflected goal, Danni Pinder in goal had no chance with either goal and pulled off several fine saves to keep Rangers in the game. Rangers were also creating several chances as the midfield of Emma Tootill, Brodie Burton, Lauren Price and Jordana Redfearn created several chances for the front two who always had the beating of their strong defenders, the best chance seeing a 25 yard free kick from Grace Wilkinson come back off the bar.

A defensive mix up let Hebden in for a third with a fine finish to give a 1 – 3 half time scoreline. Rangers started the second half on top as Shauna Glover joined the fray and had an excellent game. Many chances came their way but only one was taken as player of the match Senior doubled her and her team’s score to give Rangers hope. As the game opened up the contest was end to end with,  unfortunately, the visitors clinically taking all their chances to score 5 unanswered goals in 20 minutes and Rangers finding a keeper in good form or seeing shots just go to the wrong side of the posts or crossbar. Nicole Crowther came on to put in a good effort, and a late run and strike from Wilkinson was little consolation to the home side in an 8-3 defeat.

Dewsbury Rangers u16 Girls 5 (Wilkinson 3, Tootill, Senior) Idle Juniors u16 Girls 2

Rangers u16 girls progressed to the next round of the West Riding Girls League cup against a spirited Idle team.

Rangers were off to a flyer as they scored from the first attack. Fran Senior outpaced the visitor’s defence and put in a first time cross for Grace Wilkinson to flick on to Emma Tootill who ghosted in at the far post to crack the ball home. Rangers soon doubled the lead, as the midfield of player of the match Lauren Price, Jordana Redfearn, and Brodie Burton dominated the game to create an opening for Wilkinson to coolly slot home into the bottom corner. The home defence was totally in charge with Alex Holderness, Danni Pinder, Danni Dawson and Kirstyn Thomas keeping the opposition at bay, as Nicole Crowther in goal had little to do but coped well when called upon.

Her opposite number, was, however, constantly busy making saves on a regular basis but a rare right footed goal from Senior was hit with pace and accuracy to give Rangers their 3rd goal. The game was effectively killed off when a 25 yard free kick from Wilkinson was despatched into the top corner of the net for a 4-0 half time lead. Early in the second half Wilkinson broke clear to make it 5-0. Bethany Thomasson, Sonia Dharni and Shauna Glover on her seasonal debut, made telling contributions from the subs.’ bench, but it was the visitors who showed great character in fighting back to put in an effort that Rangers didn’t match for the final quarter of the game. Two goals to the visitors were just reward for their second half response, whilst Rangers will need to be more determined for the whole match in the coming weeks.

Cloughthorpe Tigers u16 Girls 3 Dewsbury Rangers u16 Girls 1 (Wilkinson)

A highly entertaining game between the top two teams in the division saw the home side take the spoils. Jordana Redfearn, Danni Pinder and Emma Tootill all returned to the team to make their seasonal debuts and all made a great contribution to the team. Rangers dominated the early stages with Bethany Thomasson, Lauren Price and Brodie Burton bossing midfield. The home team broke quickly and scored with their first foray into Rangers’ half. The home team had their best spell of the game as they hit the post and Nicole Crowther in goal had to on her toes to thwart further opportunities. The visitors fought back as the home side’s robust play was punished with a penalty, unfortunately for Rangers, saved by an agile Tiger’s keeper. The home side reacted well and quickly doubled their score for a half-time 2-0 lead.

Rangers virtually dominated the second half play and were soon on the scoresheet as fine passing set up Grace Wilkinson to beat the keeper with a well taken shot. Defenders Pinder, Sonia Dharni, Danni Dawson, Kirstyn Thomas, and player of the match Alex Holderness coped with all that the Tigers could offer. Fran Senior’s pace troubled the home defence and she was unfortunate on a couple of occasions not to bring the teams level. Alex Sykes continued her learning curve by battling away and combining well with her team-mates. With Rangers pushing on, a long ball from defence found a Cloughthorpe player free to score the clinching goal, to give a final score of 3-1 to the home side. Rangers have played worse this year and won, and should keep competing near the top of the table with the level of play they showed in this game.

Battyeford Ui6 Girls 3 v Dewsbury Rangers U16 Girls 5 (Price 5) (07/10/07)

With both teams missing players, this 10 a side game got under way in bright autumn sunshine. Rangers made a lively start but were unable to make the most of the opportunities that came their way – the home keeper being in top form. As so often happens a loose ball was knocked home by the home side on their first foray into Rangers half. Rangers soon levelled when Brodie Burton – improving with every game in her first full outfield season – combined well with Victoria Abbott to release Lauren Price to equalize. Despite further pressure from Rangers it was Battyeford who again took the lead with a well taken effort. Rangers possession and pressure soon told when Price notched her second and completed her hat-trick on the stroke of half time to give the visitors the lead for the first time.

The home side was quickest out of the blocks as their strong, fast winger scored a beauty into the top corner. Rangers’ wide players, Bethany Thomassen and Fran Senior worked hard throughout to give their team mates several chances to take the lead. Some brave defending by Kirstyn Thomas denied the home side as Alex Holderness alongside snuffed out any threats. Dani Dawson and Alex Sykes played excellently at full back – the latter making a confident, competitive football debut. Grace Wilkinson was constantly on her toes to clear any danger in an unaccustomed position of goalkeeper. Price’s continued hard work as a lone striker paid off as she finished off a couple of fine moves to take her and her team’s tally to 5, in a good all round team display.

Dewsbury Rangers U16 Girls 6 (Price 3, Wilkinson 2, Senior) Oulton U16 Girls 5 (23/09/07)

A great fight back by Rangers saw the home team continue the winning start to the season, and left Oulton with nothing from a game that they deserved at least a point.

Rangers took the lead in the first minute when Lauren Price capitalised on hesitancy in the Oulton defence to slot home the opener. It was the visitors who responded well to the set back as they took the game to Rangers. 3 goals in the next 20 minutes had Rangers on the back foot, and keeper Nicole Crowther was on hand to prevent further additions to the score. Grace Wilkinson brought Rangers back into the game as she received the ball on the left wing, out-paced the defence, before cutting inside to blast home from the edge of the box. The visitors scored again to resurrect a two goal advantage, only for Rangers to pull one back on the stroke of half time with a superb strike from the edge of the box by Price.

The defence had to work hard in the second half if Rangers were to get anything from the game. Sonia Dharni and Danni Dawson made sure that any attacks down the flanks were stopped with Kirstyn Thomas and Alex Holderness working hard to negate the powerful striker from the away team. Price completed her hat-trick with a strike that was too good for the Oulton keeper, but, once again, the visitors edged in front. Rangers, however, were in no mood to surrender as Price, once again playing with an injury, put in the pass of the day to find Wilkinson in full stride to run clear and score. With the score level at 5-5, the more determined Rangers team were in the ascendancy. The central mid-field battling of Victoria Abbott and Brodie Burton were an example to all as they came deep to defend and pushed forward to set up the attacks, with Beth Thomasson prominent on the right wing. It was left for Fran Senior to cap a player of the match performance as a left wing run and cross shot for the winning goal typified her efforts throughout the match. Quite a match and quite a lot for the coaches to be pleased with, and also to work on, in the coming weeks.

Nostell Miners Welfare U16 Girls 4 Dewsbury Rangers U16 Girls 12 (16/09/07)

Rangers under 16 girls made a fine start to the season with this emphatic win. Despite only having 10 players Rangers were soon dominating possession and Victoria Abbott crossed for Grace Wilkinson to slam home the opener. The lead was doubled when a pinpoint through ball by Abbott again found Wilkinson who darted between two defenders to slot home. The home side were always a threat on the break as a long ball was picked up by the strong centre forward to slot home. The visitors had to be strong in defence to prevent an equaliser with Alex Holderness and Kirstyn Thomas in central defence working hard throughout, with full backs Dani Dawson and Sonia Dharni making sure that the opposition were kept at bay. Nicole Crowther making her debut in goal handled the ball well throughout and was on hand to make a couple of good blocks. Wilkinson scored her and her team’s third after picking the ball up in the corner then cutting inside to place the ball past the keeper from a tight angle. Nostell weren’t to be denied with another goal just before the break to give Rangers a slender 3-2 lead at half-time.

Despite carrying an injury, Lauren Price combined well with Abbott to send Wilkinson in for a quick double, with Abbott cracking home a loose ball from a corner. The home side scored a goal on the break, but it was Rangers who dominated the rest of the game. Player of the match, Wilkinson scored her 6th quickly followed by Francesca Senior floating a cross-shot into the top corner. Brodie Burton, playing a full game out of goal for the first time, put some telling passes in, as Price’s bravery was rewarded with a fine goal. Burton unselfishly set up Abbott for her second, with Senior crashing home to complete her double. Despite a late consolation to Nostell, Rangers quickly responded through Price to finish off her double to complete the scoring in an excellent 12-4 victory. This was a good all round team performance that was a credit to all the team as they lasted the pace in warm conditions against a team with several substitutes.
